Is there any way to insert a graphic or image with a transparent background into a slide? Everything I insert has a solid white background.

Save the image as a gif file. The background shows transparent.

I routinely use Adobe Photoshop's "magic eraser" to select portions of photos for transparency and then save as PNG. You can also use SSP and select a particular color for transparenc and/or fade out the entire image or video.

A png file will give you more color depth than a gif. But either will work.

I do the same think Dick does, I use background eraser (PaintShop) and save as a PNG. One caveat is that I put a single pixel white dot in the corners of the image to maintain the aspect ratio of the image. I have found that not doing so causes the image to be altered when using it as a background.

Clever idea!

I generally only use pngs overlays and I've not had that problem.

Maybe it is my photo editing software, but if I save a PNG it crops the image to the outer most pixels. If I want to then use that image as a background or layer, SSP will stretch it to the edges and distort the picture. This also prevents the intended effect of letting a lower layer show through in certain places.

If I put a square image (for example) as the background of a 3:4 slide, if will be stretched; if I put the same image as an insert (overlay), it will not be stretched. Also, I use an old version of PhotoShop (Elements 2.0) for creating PNG's and it retains the original size -- i.e., doesn't crop.
