You Tell Us! > The auto-case setting

In the SSP Display Properties, there is a setting the lets you specify whether text should be automatically uppercased or not. There are two options, one is to upper case all text, and one is to ensure that all text is mixed case. The first option is useful if you prefer an all-uppercase display of song lyrics. The second is useful if you have song text that has been entered in all uppercase, but you prefer that it be displayed in mixed case. The setting is found on the Font panel for Song Text and has the label of "Upper Case".

Do you use this feature with songs. If so, do you apply it to just the song lyrics, or other song parts, like title, author, etc.

This feature is also available when displyaing scripture. Do you use this feature when displaying scripture?

Then finally, this features is also available for the Title, Main Text, and Footer text types in slide shows. Again, do you use this feature for slide shows?

Note that when adding songs to the database, you can also set the text to all uppercase or mixed case at the time that you enter it. This is a different feature and is not related to the display properties. The questions above specifically refer to the use of the auto case settings in the Dispaly Properties window.

I don't believe we use it at all. We have the case the way we want it in the song database.

I have never used it either..

I enter it how I want to see it displayed.

(Boy, I don't like the smiley selection with this editor near as much as the other editor)

(Of course, Reid is gone, so there's no one left to fix it. )

So, now that you know it exists, do you think you'll find it useful?

The only time I have used this feature is when someone sends me lyrics that are inconsistent. It is a great time saver. Unlike the others above YES I have seen it and used it. Thanks Doug!

We've had no need to use it.  I enter it the way we want it entered and then it stays that way.

It's doubtful!

PS: how do you go about putting quoted text in a nice box in these replies?

Ah ha -- I got some kind of box, but don't know how or why!

If you click the quote button above the post you want to quote, it should come in that way.

If you edit that post after posting it, you will need to use the Source button and move the /div tag up to where the bogus /quote tag is.

So, let's see if this works.

Ok, try this again!

Ok, well there is a change in how this works with the soon-to-be-released October 2007 Edition. If you used the auto-case feature in the Song Properties window, then nothing has changed. However, if you were using the auto-case display property setting, then there are some changes that may affect you.

Hello

Yes, that change in the latest Betas was a bit of a pain, but it is fine.  We use the feature all the time.  In fact, while on the subject, I would recommend two updates to it:

1. Support of French characters.  It doesn't change the case of characters that have an accent.  This is a pain.  We run one meeting in French and three in English, and the auto-case fails on French songs.  I realise this is slightly tricky and you need to work with the extended character map.

2. Support for ALL-LOWER case as well as ALL-UPPER.    This is an EASY request, tho I guess few will use it.  Not many people follow the technical way of displaing verse.  Actually, ALL-LOWER should have the very first letter of each line as a caps to be technically correct for verse.

3. We would like to stop the auto-case feature on certain songs, especially the French ones.  If possible, please put the feature back in.  I suspect in the USA the Spanish congregations will also hit some problems.

All the best

Michael

Would you really want an all lower option? What about God, Jesus, LORD, and such?

Just curious.

Hello

Yes, it is standard to use "god" "lord" etc. in verse, although I admit it is not common in non-academic circles. We use all lower case (yes, ALL lower) for our kids' ministry, even for "god"; Mixed case for most French meetings (all upper changes word meanings at times); all uppercase for Sunday meetings.

Having a global setting is very difficult when you use a PC for three different meetings. I hate global settings .... They are fine if for a single user on a PC, then each could log in and get different settings. But global for all users is TERRIBLE.

All the best
Michael

We get around this by using saved settings. The youth use the sanctuary on Wednesday night and load the Youth saved settings. When they are done, they reload the MiltonSDB saved settings.

The only disadavantages are that

a) the youth have to remember to revert back, else the person creating the weekend program has to remember how to revert back.

b) whenever I make a change to the global settings for our main service, I have to remember to resave the settings, so that we keep the change after the youth have realoaded our settings.

We use the auto-case setting regularly. When we are copying lyrics from random website or typing them as we listen to a song, the case can get all mixed up. Auto-case makes it easy to fix this.

It's a good option, but we don't use it. However, and I think this is a Wish List item, it would be wonderful if SSP would automatically Capitalize the first word on each line. Sometimes we break the song down into subverses (1a, 1b, 1c, etc.) and forget to capitalize the first word that we manually wrapped to the next line. I think many worship programs have this option.
