I just posted blog entry about the history of the Auto Cue feature in SSP.

Since its implmentation in version 3, it's become less apparent to me if this is a feature that still provides significiant usefullness. If not, then is it something that perhaps should be deprecated.

Regarding its original intent, which was to reduce the lag time when moving from one media item to another in a program: The increase in hardware performance has eliminated much of the lag time associated with rendering media items. Also, at some point since version 3, SSP was modified to preload all items in a program, so one of the big steps used in preparing media items for presentation already occurs without the use of Auto Cue.

My questions are:

1) Do you use the Auto Cue feature?

2) Have you found it to consistently reduce the lag time when moving from item to item in a program?

3) If you do use it, is it primarily to reduce the lag time when moving from one item to another, or is it to get a preview of the next item in a program by also using the Cued preview window?

4) What changes, if any, would you suggest in the Auto Cue feature?

I do not use the auto cue feature. However, I will manually cue larger items, like Powerpoints and videos.

I definitely helps with powerpoints. Of course my powerpoints are in the 7 - 9 MB range.

Cuing videos may be more out of force of habit.

I haven't seen the need for it, but sometimes having a preview on the next item is handy.

I have used cue much more than autocue and almost always for the preview feature. The one thing I don't like about cue is that I sometimes forget to turn it off and sometimes cue a slide when I mean to display it. Making the "Cue" button reset after each Cue would fix it -- but, I think, that would be worse because it would require a user to press the cue button for every slide while browsing.

I've never used AutoCue, or Cue for that matter, since I didn't know what it did. I have, however, always thought it odd that the "next screen" window didn't display the first screen of the next song when I got to the last screen of the current song. I can understand not automatically previewing a powerpoint, video, etc., but automatically previewing a slide show, song, bible verse, etc., is a no-brainer. It should just happen. The user shouldn't have to do anything to make it happen.

I use AutoCue as it lets me see what is next after the slide show I am on ends. I think it helps with DVD videos as they take a time to get started.
