Version 7 > Direct X problem

Last night, when I finished the slide show, everthing was fine.

This morning, when the operator fired up SSP, we got the alert:

"Unable to use DirectX for Display. Reason: Internal error occured. SongShow Plus can still run, but some features may be unuseable without DirectX."

I don't know what happened between last night and this morning. We've rebooted several times, to no avail.

We do have automatic updates on, so I'm wondering if a MS patch did something.

We've got it working w/o direct x  this morning. And I'll probably work with reinstalling and/or updating the video drivers.

But I was curious if anyone else has seen this.

It's ironic, because this is the first week in some time that I HAVEN'T installed an updated SSP.

Joel,

I have seen this a couple of times in the past week or so.  Usually, just shutting down and restarting SSP seems to fix the problem for me.

We get that error too.  It hasn't happened over the past week, but before that it would happen every so often.  I even left a note for the operators in case I wasn't there.  If you shut down SSP and then reopen it, it should work.

Well, I'm sure that it is NOT a SongShowPlus problem.

When the computer got fired up again this afternoon for a missions presentation, the computer does not even acknowledge the second monitor.

I did check the ATI site and there are new drivers dated TODAY!

So, as soon as this program is over (with PPT running in single screen mode ) I'll see what I can do with the drivers.

BTW, we did restart SSP several times and rebooted windows several times this morning and no joy.

We did get it to run, but w/o any of the Direct X stuff. I really missed Sparkle on my space background.

I'll be turning off Windows Automatic Updates, also. I don't know if an update got downloaded last night. But, afaik, there was nothing else changed.

I certainly hope it is the drivers, as my next guess would be a bad card.

Joel,

That problem is way more extensive than what we have experienced with SSP.  It sounds like your goofy computer is acting up again

Good news! The new driver from ATI seems to have fixed everything up.

I also turned off Automatic Updates. I don't know if that had anything to do with the problem. But I'm not real comfortable with anything happening on that computer that I don't control the timing of.

BTW, the ATI drivers are dated March 8, 2006, not today. The date of the file on my hard drive was today, but that is because I downloaded it today.

Awesome!  You got me to thinking.  I noticed the other day they had turned on automatic updates to the booth computer.  I always had turned it off.  I wonder if that could be causing us problems also.

Yes I always turn automatic updates off. I like total control (sorry Microsoft) of my computer. I usually manually go through Windows Updates and custom install. Although I doubt it had anything to do with your problem. It's possible that your video drivers may have become corrupted somehow, which isn't unheard of.

If you want to/need to the latest DirectX 9.0c is available here.

Also, if you still have further driver problems, I currently use ati Omega drivers. No, it is NOT issued by ATI, but for me have worked great, and comes with handy tools such as the ability to display video overlays fullscreen on a secondary display (quite useful if you rather use a dvd software program than the built-in dvd. Plus more control of you directx options (if you know what they are and what they do ).

You can get them here: http://www.omegadrivers.net.

Btw Karen, you have a cute puppy there (assuming that's you and your puppy)
