Version 8.1 > powerpoint to stage monitor

I understood 8.1 was meant to display powerpoints to the display monitor. All I got was a black screen. It plays video files to the stage monitor fine.

You are correct - PPT should show on the Stage Display when presented. I just verified that this worked with my test PPT files.
I would check your Slide Properties and perhaps set them to default to make sure there is not a setting causing this.
