Is anyone able to use Background Improv in SSP8?
It's not a feature I've been able to use before, so I'm not sure if I'm doing it properly... but I'm getting the following error in the Notices section whenever I try it: "Unable to use background fill: Background Improv. Reason: Component not found: Background Improv."

Can anybody help me get Background Improv working? It's not a feature I've ever been able to use before, so I'm very excited that it's working in SSP8 now. But I can't figure out how to enable and/or use it, and I haven't been able to find instructions anywhere (even for SSP7). I've tried setting the background to BGI (in the slideshow builder's background properties), and setting the background to BGI in the default slide show properties in SSP, but nothing happens when I click the thumbnails in the Background Improv panel.
I'm sure there's something I'm missing - if somebody who has this working in SSP8 could walk me through the procedure for setting it up, I would greatly appreciate it.

Stuart,
Here is the quick and dirty on BGI...
We will start easy with a Song and then you should be able to carry this to other places.
Here is the quick and dirty on BGI...
We will start easy with a Song and then you should be able to carry this to other places.
- Launch SSP.
- From the main tool bar select Slide Properties > General Use...
- Under General Use select the Background property group.
- Click on the Background Improv button to change the Single Layer to Background Improv.
- Leave all the defaults and click OK to close.
- Present a song from the Songs DB panel.
- From the BGI panel at the bottom, select a folder to display some files and either click on the green present arrow or double-click the thumbnail to invoke the BGI change.
This can be applied in a similar fashion at numerous places as can most any Slide Property.
If this does not work as expected let me know and we can take a look.

George,
Following your steps above, I selected Slide Properties > General Use
The Background property group looks like this:
After I click on Background Improv and wait for the "please wait a moment" pop-up, the dialog looks like this:
The Layers box is empty and the Apply button is not available. If I click on OK and then re-open the Slide Properties dialog, the dialog looks identical to the first screenshot (Gradient is still selected under Layers). Still can't get it to work for me.

Stuart,
Did you update to the 7/1 build? There was a previous issue with BGI that was fixed. You will need to update first if you have not.
Let me know if you did update and are still getting an error so we can take a look.

I am using the 7/1 build (Just re-installed to be sure). There is an alert (appears in the Notices dialog after I click on Background Improv in step 4) which says: "An unexpected error occurred. Please contact technical support if this problem continues."

Interesting...
What OS are you using and do you also have SSP 7 installed on the same system?
After I explore on this end we may need to take a look at your system if you are available. I will contact you directly by email for this...
Thanks,

Windows 7 Professional SP1. SSP7 is still installed.

This may be a clue. I connected via Mobile Control and tried Background Improv from there. I got the following alert:
"Unable to use fill type: Solid. Reason: Unable to convert class name to class ID: RmeStockFills.Fill. Readon: Invalid class string."
I also get the same alert for fill type Image and Video File.

I also get the same alert for fill type Image and Video File.

Hi George,
I have the same issue - with the please wait a moment and the error in notices.
I'm running build 7/31 on windows 7 SP1 x64
I also have SSP7 installed (latest build as well).

Updated to the new (7/31) build, but still have exactly the same issue ("An unexpected error occurred. Please contact technical support if this problem continues.")

Updated to the 8/8 build, and still unable to use background improve on any of my machines.

We believe this error has been tracked down (Thanks Stuart) and we hope to have a resolution in the next Preview release.
Keep them coming...

Thanks SSP Team and Stuart :)
After installing 22/08/13 I could assign background improv but changing directories within background improv crashed ssp8. After 5 or so crashes it's now working normally.
I wonder if SSP was waiting on windows search/thumbnails or something...anyway thought you should now :)

Chris,
Please elaborate on the "crashes" that you experienced. Did it stop responding or close spontaneously?
Where were you changing directories?
What types of files were you browsing?
I did not encounter any behavior like this when checking this out.

Did it stop responding or close spontaneously?
Stopped responding. Never recovered so had to force close songshow each time.
Where were you changing directories?
In Background Improv.
What types of files were you browsing?
SSP defaults to the root video folder (in background improv). I could change the view type without a problem.
Attempting to change directory or change to Images (within background improv) resulted in songshow not responding.
Also no thumbnails were showing for the videos in background improv.
Just to try everything with my activation issue, after deactivating songshow one of the times I tried a reinstall (uninstall then installed the 22/08/13 version) and the problem reappeared.
So I copied all the files out of the video root directory to a sub directory. Songshow then worked as expected, so I shutdown SSP, copied the files back and it worked as expected. So I did a reinstall one more time and now it all works normally.
It has just occurred to me that I should have checked in media files/videos with thumbnail view, but it's now too late to try.
Does this help?

Hey all, my background improv is working however when changing for one background to another it flickers? I have had the same problem in ssp7.

Tyler,
I need additional details on this. It is our understanding that the BGI flicker was resolved. I along with several others checked this and it appeared to be resolved. If that is not the case we need to know ASAP.
Please provide details on number of occurrences and consistency of replication, file types, system info - the works.

Yes well first off I have the latest build, now I know with v7 it would flicker the whole time it was playing but here it seems to only happen in transition, the videos are in wmv 1024x765 (not sure if that's the exact resolution) we have a quad core a6 3600 processor with a nvidia 660 video card, 4gb on the bored and 2gb on the video card, we are running two displays plus the control display. And I have the multi core setting turned on in ssp8, Any thing else? And thank you for the help.
3/11/2014 10:59:47 AM
I don't know that this will help but in SSP7 I get blinks when multicore is turned on therefore I leave it off have you tried turning multicore off in SSP8 does it help?
3/11/2014 11:25:01 AM
Ya I know thats the "problem" they where talking about, they didn't want to fix it in v7 because they where coming out v8, I dont know if that will help but if it dose it would slow other parts of ssp, hopefully we can come up with a solution that Will still allow us to use the full potential of our computer.

Tyler - thanks for the info. I need a bit more...
You stated it only happened on the transition.
First - is it a "blip" or throughout the whole transition?
Second - What transition are you using? Did you try other transitions? different transition lengths? does it matter?
You stated that you have two displays - are these both Projection displays or Projection and Stage?
If you have two projection displays does the same thing happen on both of them?
Thanks.

It is though the whole transition, it's the fade transition and it dose not make a matter about the fade time, and we have two projector and yes they do do the same thing

Tyler - Thanks - that is all good info and will give me something to work with.
2 more questions (for now) to make sure we are exactly on the same page:
1. can you tell if it is just the background video that is flickering or is it all the projected content?
2. The issue you are seeing/talking about is on the projected output screens and NOT only on the Control monitor(s) - correct?
Thanks.
