This year for VBS, Group's Avalance Ranch, we were able to take some mountians like the ones at the bottom of this page and overlay it over the clouds visualization. Really neat effect.
Then, because we do now have alpha channel tranparency, the different charaters no longer need to be in a white rectangle, but rather now are shaped images over the background in a SSPSS, with the mountians and the moving clouds as mentioned above.
It looks really good.
