The Wave Pool > Ipad and SSP?

Just thinking out loud after the iPad presentation, but wouldn't it be sweet to have SSP on the iPad? Very portable piece of hardware that just works! Along with SSP that works very well and has a nice interface and Steve Jobs also stated you can connect the iPad to a projector. Mobile churches could really exploit the power and portability of the iPad.

Again, just thinking out loud, but for $499, very nice!

I doubt that SSP will ever go to the iPad before it does Macintosh computers, and even then I think it will be able to be run emulated on Mac's, not native.

That said, I will be buying a iPad, and using it with VNC for controlling SSP.

Eric -

That would be very cool but the hardware is just not there to adequately run SSP.

Lucas -

The device does seem to have some potential but that seems awful spendy for a remote...

True, but through the wonders of working for a Apple dealer, and salary sacrificing options I can drive the price down.

I currently use my HTC Magic for controlling SSP remotely (VNC). I would truely LOVE a 10" screen with 10 hours battery life to do it instead.

WOW - that is cool.  I'll bet you get all kinds of cool stuff...

So I guess you are going to buy 2 of them and send one to us for "testing", right?

Sure, just send me $499USD.

Hmm... it is completely feasible, the iPad is easily powerful enough to run pretty heavy graphics. However, it doesn't support DirectX (as far as I am aware) so the entire rendering framework of SSP would have to be rewritten from scratch. Also, SSP is a very high load program (although it doesn't need to be.)

So, basically, they would have to completely redo SSP to make it far more efficent and to make it use Apple's coding, etc...
If they were to do this, they could fairly easily make SSP for Mac as well... therefore opening up to an entirely new market.

P.S.: If you do, PLEEEEASE put me on the dev team!

Jamie. I think it's important to not confuse what the iPad can do, and what you should do with a iPad.
See, I think most SSP users would not like the idea of running SSP on a iPad, Too much at stake. That 30 pin dock connector is one of the most easily broken cables I've ever seen!
Not to mention that if it does break, you essentially need a new cable. there's no soldering a quick fix on one of them.

That said, I do not believe that the iPad has enough oomph to run SSP, nor do I think that you could easily adapt SSP's interface to fit within Apple's draconian 'experience' guidelines, all on a screen that's 1024x768!

I'd rather see the iPad used as a control 'surface' for SSP. And to this end, I've actually been playing with some ideas in the iPad/iPhone SDK to perhaps use with SSP one day.

No. SSP on iPad is not possible at all. DirectX ONLY works with windows.
Plus the iPad is based off of iPod OS. Unless SSP is making an 'app', don't expect to try it.

'Apple's coding'... there is not such a thing as 'Apple's coding'. The main thing that SSP would need to do is instead of DirectX, they should use OpenGL which would work on Linux, which MacOSX is based off of.

:s If you had read my post in full, you would know that I did say that DirectX cannot be used on Mac OS X/iOS.

BTW: Neither of Apple's operating systems are based on Linux...

No. OS X is based on FreeBSD.

Thanks to the portability of the iPad, I can easily use it as my portable computer. As you said, I linked it to the projector, which brought me a lot of convenience. Also, I think it's a good time to buy old iPad models, they work very well and are cheaper.
