Version 7 > Powerpoint slides

There are several issues displaying slides that we are having.  After a slide is loaded and is an active service element we have three intermittent problems that arise in no specific sequence with no apparent cause.

- The entire program will lock up after attempting to activate and play a selected slide show.
- The ability to drop down and see the amount of slide from within the program window goes away.  The slides can still be run, but in order to select specific slides you must right click the drop down arrow.
- There will be an extreme amount of lag from one slide to another.

It should be noted that we are not converting the files and that they are built in PPT 2010.  We just import and run them as PPT files within SSP7.

From reviewing other topics and threads it seems that it could just be that my versions of SSP and PPT don't care for each other.  Just looking to see if anyone else has had the issues regularly, and if so what solution worked best.  Should I just tell the staff that we should only build our slides within SSP?

Thanks!

I know I had troubles with #2 when I would open and close Powerpoint outside of SSP (to edit other PPT files). After I closed it, something would get messed up with SSP's execution of PPT.

One thing I found that helped was to start up Pwoerpoint ouside of SSP and leave it running in the background.

From what I understand, SSP is happiest with PPT 2010, but I've not had a chance to try it.

If you have a chance, I'd give Support a call and let them take a look at it.

Thanks for the response Joel!  Sorry I didn't reply for a while.  Just remembered that I posted this and came back to check it.  Decided after reading a few other threads to try the import feature in SSP instead of running the .ppt files directly.  It is definitely a conflict with ppt and ssp.  Not sure exactly why or how.  Now I just need to play with the slide show builder and become accustomed to the synonymous features so they work the same as the original files.

One more point to throw in.. In the past I had SSP/PPT issues like you describe (and a few others you did not). Since upgrading to Office 2010 (and recent versions of SSP) I have had no PPT glitches at all.
The other thing to keep in mind is that both of these applications are resource hungry; to run both of them simultaneously (which is how SSP plays PPT presentations) requires a fairly substantial machine. I don't know exactly how much memory is required, but I suspect if you have less than 2 GB, you will have problems running PPT from SSP especially if you are doing anything more than very basic presentations. Graphics memory and CPU power are also important.

We also have SSP and PPT10 on our system and never could make it work..  I also had to load PowerPoint outside of SSP in order to run a PPT slide show.  It seems that the PowerPoint viewer has a problem with ssp.  Every time we try and run a PPT slide show in SSP it will lock up the computer.  I have trouble explaining to our WT leader that there is a problem with the PPT thing and all I get is "What does every one else use".  Seems that there is a mission afoot to replace SSP with EW or ProPresenter (neither are my choice but I dont make the calls) if we cant make it work.  We also can not get youtube to play correctly either.  It wants us to run it from youtube.  I am not a fan of there advertising if you know what I mean and do not feel comfortable running it that way.  This used to work.  Did Youtube start limiting its use?  If we can't get a solution I am sure that they, (the wt leader and staff) will make us change worship software.  Can anybody help please?????

SSP was not designed to work with the Powerpoint Viewer. you need to have a full version of Powerpoint installed on your projection machine to have it work and play well with SongShow Plus.

Here's an FAQ entry on what's supported.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you say PPT "10". SSP is designed to work with PowerPoint 2010 and the latest edition of SSP should work the best of all previous editions. If you are having problems with PowerPoint 2010, then I suggest initiating a support call. Regarding YouTube: Yes, SSP simply calls up the YouTube player to play those -- it's not an import process. There are tools out there available for downloading YouTube videos on to a local machine, and we do recommend doing that if you can.

Greg,

To expand on your YouTube issue:
As Doug said, SSP just calls the YouTube player to play within SSP but there is some YouTube content that does not allow the embed feature to work and will make you go to the YouTube site to play it. I assume that was what you were talking about when you said "It wants us to run it from YouTube".  In either case we can not suppress the ads so as Doug suggested you will want to download the video to get ad-free playback.

Regarding your PowerPoint issue:
Depending on the content in your PPT files, using the "Convert a PowerPoint Presentation" option when importing them into SongShow Plus to create a SlideShow Builder slide show may be the way to go. If this does not work for you then definitely a support call is in order.

As an alternative, I suggest you use the SlideShow Builder to create your slide shows.  It is an integral part of SongShow Plus and will work much better than any PPT slideshow.

I love the convert to slide show option. But you will not have any animations or the transitions that were in the slide show. You can add transitions back in once in SlideShow Builder. But the powerpoint slides have been converted to full screen graphic files, so you cannot animate anything on or edit slide content.

That said, it's still a great way to go, if you don't need animations.

A lot of my problems went away when I switched to using the SSP SlideShow Builder rather than Powerpoint. I only use Powerpoint anymore when we have a guest presenter and even then, I use the import to SlideShow Builder whenever possible.

And some would say that good taste dictates that you shouldn't use those animations anyway .

We've been animation free for years. We aim not to distract.

I've not heard of that term, so I'm not sure what you are looking for.

SongShow Plus will show prepeared Powerpoint decks on machines that have Powerpoint installed.

It will also import Powerpoint decks as a series of static images.

You can download a free trial version of SongShow Plus
