Version 5.5 > User Poll : Which video card(s) are you using?

I'd like to poll SSP users and compile a list in this post of video cards that are being used and how well they have performed for them.

It would be nice to mention your experiences with Version 7.

Thanks.

I have two machines with ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB, one with 9800 XT 256MB, and a workstation with NVidia GeForce Ti 4200 32MB.

All the machines are older, having AGP busses. The first three are 2.6 +/- something GHz while the workstation is 500MHz.

The workstation burps a lot but nevetheless runs everything; the other three work fine.

V7 seems to perform the same as 5.5.

I just installed an ASUS Radeon AX800 Pro 256mb, AGP and we are very pleased with it.

We use an ATI Radeon X700 Pro with 256MB of Ram and are pleased.

We had an X300SE with 128MB of ram and were not pleased. The SE cards are to be stayed away from. They are made from chips that couldn't pass the test to be on a Pro or better card.

Our projection PC has an NVidia 5600 256MB that was included in the Fowler supplied system, and works well.

The workstation system (which I plan on taking to the Charlseton Training event) has an ATI Sapphire 9600 256MB that works well.

Both machines are Dell GX270 with AGP bus.

I'm using a Radeon X800 Pro, and it is amazing.  I've also tested with an NVIDIA 6600GT (which ran great), and an NVIDIA 5600 (which ran ok, but struggled on some settings).  It's been almost a year since I was using a Radeon 9800 Pro, but it did a great job at the time.

My turn!

I have an nVidia 5600FX that does pretty well.  Some of the new features don't work well on it but it runs SSP and all the visualizations well.

I also have an nVidia 6600GT that runs everything smooth as silk.

I ALSO have an ATI X700 Pro 256 megabyte PCIx card that works VERY well and works with XP SP2.

On top of that I have a an ATI X300 card that doesn't work well at all.

Once in a while I'll steal Steven's X800 Pro or Reid's 6800Ultra... both work amazingly well.  (And that's to be expected.)

Now, if someone wants to loan me a 7800GTX card I'd be more than happy to report that it too works REALLY well.

I have been using an ATI AiW X600 Pro 256MB PCIx since August, and I have been very, very happy with its performance as a video card.  I haven't had time to monkey with the capture part of the card yet.  It is running on an AMD A64 3500+, Abit AN8 SLI, 1GB DC PC3200, 250GB SATA HDD, XP Pro SP2.

Previously we were using a P4 2.66 with NVidia 5600 256MB, w/ 512MB PC3200.  It worked OK w/ SSP, but PPT fades were choppy.

We are using fx5200's with 128meg PCI.  3d transitions can look a little ragged if using motion videos.  MPEG1 vidoes play fine but I've had trouble using MPEG2.  For a typical Sunday morning they seem to work OK but we have over worked them during our youth services.

I've been pushing for an upgrade to the 6800GT but at nearly $300 each I am going to work hard to prove their value.

Really...I didn't know you stole my card. I guess that's what I get for working out of the office some days. But just to clarify my system has a BFG 6800 OC, it's not the Ultra. But Doug has a 6800 Ultra.

Is it a sin to covet thy neighbor's video card?

In my defense, Steven had a higher end video card than I had for quite some time.  It's just that we needed my FX 5600 for testing, so I had little choice but to upgrade, and since I needed to purchase a card quickly, I went to CompUSA which had only the highest-end nVidia available in AGP...oh, forget it...it's good to be king.

(I'm now eyeing David's AMD X2 system -- how much testing do we really need to do on a 64-bit dual core system anyway -- [evil laugh] ?)

I believe my XP SP2/ATI/DirectX issue has been resolved.

While at the Charleston Training, I barrowed a Monitor from SeaCoast with the assistance of Chris from Savannah. When I connected it, booted up, and opened SSP, the error never appeared. That jogged Dave's memory, and he said that someone else had once had an issue with a monitor causing errors in SSP. When a new one was plugged in, the error never appeared. When the old one was reconnected, the error re-appeared.

As soon as I get a chance, I will boot to the HDD with XPSP2 to see if the monitor makes the difference.

A good excuse to take advantage of the used monitors they are selling here. 17 or 19 LCD for around 100-150. If there are any that the previous user didn't keep.

I am running Windows Xp on a AMD 64 processor (3000)
1 Gig of Ram and a Geforce4 5900 Card(256mb)

I have not had any issues with running anything Song Show has to offer.

We got an inexpensive 6200 256MB to use until we upgrade the projection computer.  It solved a problem with XP sr2 we had.  It is doing fine but we couple it with 1GB of ram. We set the min for office machines at 512MB so we could not put the same in the projection machine. With a new machine we may opt for more memory if we see a deal.   David

We're running ATI 9800 PRO 128MB ... runs great as others mentioned
(P4 2.4Ghz - 512MB Ram)

However I am pretty sure Lee's video card Ti4200 has a 64MB  ... I know because I have one in my home system

(OFFTOPIC: I am running the 2nd display (on the 9800 PRO card) rotated 180 degrees .................. by doing that, some of the videos & dvds (outside SSP, like in wmp or power dvd) wont display on 2nd display ........ I think it is ATI's driver related .... I don't know if NVIDIA has the same issue, if somebody can test it and let me know, thanks)

Not using 7 yet, we use version 4 still and have had no problems with any displays.

Currently:
  • Machine 1 (Athlon XP2600+, 512MB) - Powercolor Radeon 9600XT Bravo AGP 256 MB
  • Machine 2 (Celeron 325, 512MB) - Powercolor Radeon 9250 PCI, 128 MB
  • Machine 3 (Pentium III 666, 384 MB) - Leadtek ???, 32 MB

Version 7 us only currently available for the Early Looks group. You can sign up for this on the downloads page.

One of the requirements of being in the Early Looks group is that conversations about the current state of v7 be restricted to the Early Looks forum. The only exception for that are the goodies that Doug occasionally SSPlogs about.

That's why you are not hearing about v7.
