Is there a way to put an audio track behind a slide show..for example our announcements?

Not in 5.5. I am hoping it will eventually happen in version 7. May I suggest that you submit it to the wish list?

Doug posted a comment once that a number of people have requested not only an ability to play audio files in SSB, but also the audio content of a video background file.

By following Tom's advice to submit it as a wish helps Doug get a feel for the number of people desiring this feature.
