while running a power point program through SSP last night we got an error message;

"out of memory" and the computer shut down. We have the lastest SSP verison  and are using power point 2007. Any ideas?

Thanks.

How much RAM do you have in the machine? Do you have a swap file configured for Windows?

XP or Vista?

2 meg. of Ram. XP pro. I have no idea "swap" file is.

Hopefully, you mean 2 GIG of RAM. If it really is 2 meg of RAM, then we have found the problem. (Glad to see someone besides me make that mistake while typing.)

With 2 gig of RAM, a swap shouldn't be the issue. I guess XP is calling it "virtual memory" or a paging file.

  • Right click on My Computer
  • Select Properties
  • In System Properties window, select Advanced tab
  • In Performance Options window, select Advanced tab
  • Virtual memory is the bottom box of that window

But like I said, with 2 gig of RAM, you shouldn't be hitting virtual memory.

I'd call tech support and let them noodle on it.

You' re right it is two GB of Ram. I don't know my ram from mega bites!
What do I do with the vitural memory?

There is a recent upgrade to SSP that resolved a memory leak issue, but I believe it was only for SSBuilder.

Virtual Memory (VM) is a reserved space on your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) that is usually 1.5 times the size of the Physical RAM (Random Access Memory). The contents of the RAM is wiped when the machine is powered down, or when it is replaced by a recently requested program/action.

No matter how big your HDD, your computer only runs on the amount of RAM installed in your computer. Your computer will use the VM on your HDD to store data that is too large to fit in memory. It is usually for open programs that haven't been used recently (minimized windows), but can be used for active programs. Programs that use more memory than what is physically installed will cause the PC to run much more slowly than normal, because the access to data on the HDD is MUCH slower than the access to the data on the RAM. Once the requested data outgrows the RAM and VM, the PC can do nothing more, so it shuts down.

VM can be increased, but it is not recommended to have more than 4GB of memory available to 32bit Windows. I have recently read that you should include Video memory in that total, but I have not see it confirmed by someone I consider 'in-the-know'. Nor do I have the resources or desire to push that limit.

If you're not using the 9/30 build, please install it. It's likely that the problem you're experiencing has been fixed in that build.
