Version 7 > SSP Lagging

We recently upgraded to version 7.  Prior to the upgrade we were having terrible problems with v.5 locking up, slow start up, restarts in the middle of the service, etc...  After the upgrade this problem persisted.  I uninstalled the whole program and reinstalled it a couple of weeks ago and after the reinstall things seemed to be doing better.......until today.  I am starting to see the same slow downs and the old problems are starting to crop up again.  When I reinstalled I turned off Norton thinking maybe it was not turned off before and I thought that might have cured it, but with this cropping up again I am at a loss.  Will upgrading again to the very latest and greatest version of SSP help or could I be looking at a hardware problem?  Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

James

What are the specs of the computer you are using?

I'd do a spyware and a full antivirus scan as a first step.

But, system specs would help with further ideas.

Sounds like a great system.

You may want to try running Windows Task Manager and see if you are memory or CPU constrained (you shouldn't be, with those specks) and check the Processes to see what else may be running on your machine.

Is there any particulars about what you are showing when it lags? I just installed a new system and powerpoint was lagging horribly, until I reconfigured it to use PPT control rather than SSP control. Then it picked up quite a bit.

Then I noticed that the AV was doing a full disk scan. That was certainly a performance killer, but probably not what's happening on your machine.

Are you running motion backgrounds? Loops or visualizations? Are you using the video effects for transparency or color modifications or the like?

Or is it items like DVD playing where the lag is occurring?

If running spyware cleaning software found something, and cleaning it made made an improvement, but it is still slow, you may have to do another re-image. In my experience with spyware, they are making it harder and harder to clean. I manage some techs that are very well versed at removing spyware the hard way (Regedit, stopping services, setting file permissions, and a command-line process killer), and they still have to re-image some of the PCs.

I'm going to add my favorite bit of advice as well.  Make sure your video drivers are up to date.  Don't just use the ones that came with the system.  Go to ati.com and download their latest drivers.  They can make a HUGE difference in performance related issues.
