So What Happened to Version 6?

7/13/2005

We are preparing for the launch of SSP version 7.  For those who have been paying attention, the question has already come up: “What happened to version 6?”  One poster at ChurchMedia.net posited the idea that we are skipping 6 because “it is the number of evil.”  Need I say more?  Perhaps not, but I will.  Just to clarify that we here at R-Technics are not overly suspicious about certain numbers, I will offer some insight into this decision.

First of all, version 5.5 was, in essence, version 6.  There were significant changes made in the graphics engine used by SSP to accommodate motion backgrounds and 3D effects.  Also, contrary to our previous practices, the user interface had several significant changes.  Some user interface changes were necessary to accommodate the new graphics capabilities, but some were changes that had been planned for version 6.

So what happened to version 6?  Well, the executive level summary explanation is this: Industry related forces converged with product development timing and market response requiring a necessary course of action to ensure future market potential.  Thus we have version “5.5” and not version “6”.  This should clear up the mystery.

But why not use version “6” now?  Well, because version 5.5 is essentially version 6, the jump to 7 isn’t really out of line.  But more importantly, with the release of version 7, we’ll be making some significant changes in how we go about the further development of SSP.  This jump helps emphasize that even more.
