V7 Required System Configuration: A Tough Question to Answser

10/31/2005  < Previous  Next >

We are frequently asked what the required system configuration is to run SSP.  We do have this information available.  We have also been asked what changes, if any, are being made to the required system configuration with SSP V7.  The short answer is that the required system configuration for SSP V7 is the same as that for SSP 5.5, that is, SSP V7 features are compatible with the same hardware you are using to run SSP 5.5 features.

Please understand that when we speak of compatibility, we are speaking of function only, not necessarily performance.  Our intent with SSP V7 is to ensure that all of the stock features and ProModules included with the SSP package function on the same hardware as 5.5.  This means that even pre-DirectX 9 video cards, like the GeForce 4, are supported.

However...

this does not mean that all new features will perform adequately in all (or even any) situations using an older card.  Nor can we guarantee that there won't be some combination of effects, visualizations, animations, transitions, etc., etc. all used together at one time that won't bring even the highest end video card available today to it's knees.

The features and flexibility that SSP brings you (and just wait until you see what's coming after the initial release) will let you push your system as far as it can go.

When asking us what are the recommended minimum requirements -- we need a context.  What is the most you will ever do with your machine?  If you answer this question, we can give you some guidelines.  However, do not pretend that you will never use certain features.  Once you see them, and decide they’re cool, you'll want to use them.

Thus, the advice -- obtain the highest end system (video and everything else) that you can afford -- is the only safe answer.  However, if all you want to do is put a motion video background behind static text -- no cool effects, no 3D transitions, etc. -- well, there are many lower-end configurations that are adequate for this task.  But hey, we’re giving you a great excuse to request that hardware upgrade you’ve always wanted!
