Looking Ahead: What happend to the green diamond?

A comment was recently made on one of our forums regarding the disappearance of the green diamond.  The green diamond being used in pre-V7 SSP to display media items like songs, videos, etc.

The green diamond has been in use for quite awhile in SSP.  Prior to the diamond it was a green asterisk (the change was made in version 4 or 5, I don’t recall exactly).  My observations of both new users and other multimedia software (not necessarily other worship presentation software) is that the “play” button is quite universal and so is the understanding of its purpose.  So in the process of making SSP more user-friendly for the mainstream market, the play button has replaced the green diamond.

So why the green-orange combination? Well, first of all, this is not necessarily the final color combination to be used.  A change could yet take place.  But this is the thinking so far: Green was chosen for continuity with its predecessor, the green diamond.  Orange then works because it is a contrasting color and stands out from within the body of the button.  Also, this particular play button needs to look unique from other play buttons that will appear in the control window.  Any green-orange button you see means that, if you click it, something will happen on the display window.  For other play buttons you see in the control window usually will not affect the display window.  I say “usually” because if a play button is located in media control toolbar then it does affect the display window.  Play buttons at other places, like the inspector windows, do not.

So, there’s the brief explanation about that particular change -- and I say again -- this could change. ;-)
