The importance of AGP drivers

3/13/2007

When installing Windows an a new machine, typically, once the installation is complete, you install the video drivers for your card, and away you go.  Installing the latest video drivers is always a good idea.  However, it is also important that you be sure to install the latest AGP drivers for your motherboard.  Significant system instability can be caused by using the default AGP drivers, particularly if you are using applications that use DirectX.

The easiest way to find the latest drivers for your motherboard is to go to the web page of manufacturer.  Somewhere there you should be able to find a setup program containing the latest version of these drivers.

Many newer systems use a new technology called PCI-Express or PCIe instead of AGP.  On these systems the AGP drivers are no longer used and are not an issue.
