SSP Best Practices - Housekeeping for SongShow Plus - Program Files

9/18/2023

Applicable SongShow Plus Versions:
This article applies to all versions of SongShow Plus

In addition to the information noted in other articles, we make the following general recommendations regarding media housekeeping in SongShow Plus:

Program files can tend to accumulate over time.  While having many choices for Programs to use with SongShow Plus can allow for creative presentations, too many Programs can cause issues of both management and redundancy. This can also make moving SongShow Plus to a different machine or preparing for catastrophic failures more cumbersome with overly large backups required.

For the best result, we recommend that you periodically clean up your Program files, locating Programs that are dated or no longer relevant to delete from the SongShow Plus database.  This includes not only Programs but other typical media such as Images, Videos and Audio Tracks, Slideshows, or other files that are no longer relevant. There are other articles for specific help with other file types.

Tips for selecting Files to Clean-up

  • Look for files that are more than a few years old for removal.
  • Look for files that are duplicates for removal.
  • Look for files that are not in the correct folder for removal.
    • SSP will only show the supported file types in a given Media Files panel. Sometimes incorrect or unrelated file types get manually placed in the wrong location, such as a video file in the image folder.  This may cause issues with both search and speed of population of files.

Tips for File Removal

  • If you only have a few Program files to remove, you can select the desired file, right-click and select the Delete... option from the menu. This will give you the option to send to Recycle or permanently delete it. To access the Programs location to remove a few files:
    • From the Programs panel select File > Open Program.
    • Select the Programs root folder then browse to the location of the file you want to remove.
    • Select then right-click the file to delete, then select Delete.
    • You may be prompted to recycle or permanently delete - select Permanently and click Yes.
    • Repeat if there are other Programs to remove.
  • If you have several Program files to remove all at once, you will need to access the root Programs folder. You can do this indirectly by accessing the Slide Shows root folder:
    • Select the Slide Show media tab.
    • Select the Slide Show Files folder, then right-click it and select the Explore option from the menu.  This will open the folder in Windows File Explorer.
    • From this folder you will need to go up one level which should be the SongShow Plus folder.  This holds all of the files for your SongShow Plus media database.
    • Once you are at the root SongShow Plus folder, locate and open the Programs folder.
    • From here you can select and delete many files at once.
    • Once you complete this you should restart Song Show Plus.

Following these guidelines for your SongShow Plus system should contribute to trouble-free use.
